With the development of computer science and numerical modeling technology, numerical model of hydrodynamics and sediment has become one of the most important method in studying the waves, tidal current and sediment transport in nearshore area. However, in order to complete the modeling task, researchers have to use many different preprocessing and postprocessing software because most of the numerical models, except some commercial software, don't provide these components. Thus it's important and helpful to develop a preprocessing and postprocessing system for hydrodynamic numerical models. In the present paper, an integrated GIS, which possesses the advatange of visualization, data query and analysis, is developed on the basis of ComGIS and by using the Access as its background database and using the Delphi as its programming language. For the preprocessing, the system implements functions such as coordinate conversion between (latitude and longtitude) and (Cartesian coordinate), display of satellite remote sensing images and CAD files, interpolation with high efficiency, data access between GIS and wave models, tidal current models and sediment transport models. For the postprocessing, the system implements functions such as input and output of large volume data, visualization and animation of scalar and vector data, query and analysis of simulation result, and visualization and fly navigation of 3-D terrain by OpenGL.The application of the GIS indicates that it can successfully deal with the preprocessing and postprocessing for the simulation of harbor siltation.
