At Present, with the high-speed development of social economy and city construction, the drainpipe networks has become more and more complicated and huge. However the traditional manual method can hardly meet the demands for the management of urban drainpipe networks. In this background, there is an urgent demand for the development of urban drainpipe management information system. As the high-speed development of computer technology and wide application of the Geographical Information System (GIS),it is essential to develop a drainpipe management information system based on GIS, which can meet the needs of city planning, projecting and managing departments. The drainpipe networks geographical information system which abbreviates as DPN-GIS is an application developed with the Mapobjects of ESRI and Visual Basic Language in the VB programming environment. The system deals with the space and attributes data of drainage pipeline networks in some development zone of Wuhan, it has actualized the mutual management of attribute and space data. The system has the basic function of data collection and store of drainpipe. At the same time, it can also meet the need of data updating, figure editting, the inquiry function of pipeline networks, the mutual inquiry of the entity and attribute, statistic function, the browseing and modification of the database. The drainpipe networks geographical information system is a new booming application domain and has a good potential. We can obtain needed information of drainpipe networks accurately and rapidly through this system, we can also accelerate updating the drainpipe data and enlarge the sharing extent of information. In the end of the paper, the existing achievement and some future perspective of DPN—GIS are disscussed.
