According to literature review, this thesis elucidates the functional transformation of Changchun for three times, and concludes the periodization of the development of Changchun City during 1900 through the late 1950s. The theoretical basis for such historical periodization is that urban structure is the projection of urban function. The methodology used in this thesis mainly pertains to Historical geography, which straightens out the history of the development of Changchun in the light of comparison of cities geographically.Changchun started modernization as a small frontier town in Qing Dynasty, while it became the city with highest urbanization level among modern Chinese cities at that time through 30 years'development. In the meantime, Northeast China was the region with the highest speed in urbanization in China. This thesis will look into the causes resulting in the drastic change, as well as the substantial effects in urban structure of Changchun as a result of the change.Nonetheless, modernization and urbanization of Changchun City is not an isolate phenomenon, which should be put in a larger context for study. Intended to obtain a more explicit recognition of the origins and characteristics of the urban structure of the city, comparative study is necessary for Changchun and other cities, both at home and abroad. Fortunately, with a particular historical and cultural background, Changchun provides an ideal model for the comparative study of cities.
