In China, electronic railway has been undergoing a development over thirty years. Electronic railway brings big economic results to the national economy. However, frequent faults of catenary seriously restrict the full advantage of electronic railway. One of the most urgent and critical mission, during the current construction of electronic railway, is to enhance the reliability of electronic railway, especially the catenary. So, it is necessary to emphasize reliability technology research as well as its application to electronic railway.This paper systematically introduced the fundamentals of reliability engineering. Among these are: Brief Description of Reliability Discipline, Definition and Characteristic of Reliability, Mathematics Fundamental of Reliability, Reliability Model, Reliability Prediction, Reliability Allocation, Fault Mode Effect and Critical Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Reliability Design, Maintenance Design, etc. Applying reliability theory to catenary system, this paper built reliability model of catenary system, introduced analysis ways of catenary system reliability prediction and allocation, conducted fault mode effect and critical analysis of catenary system and built corresponding forms, built fault trees of catenary system, introduced the reliability design ways of catenary system's typical components, calculated the effectiveness of at last catenary system, conducted mechanics analysis, antisepsis technical and surface mange technical of catenary system components,choose metal matierial of catenary system components, figurationg technical of catenary system's typical components, quality Control of catenary system components in manufacture process,sumarized the research category of catenary system reliability engineering.The completion of this paper has singnificant theory meaning and application value for enhancing the reliability level of catenary in China.
