This thesis designs belt conveyor through virtual prototype. Namely in the conceptual design stage, through the discipline theory and the computer language, virtual performance test is carried out to design stage product, improve the design performance, reduce design cost and decrease product development time.Belt conveyors are the major equipments for bulk material transportation. With development of technology, it has been the main torrent that the use of long-distance, large-capacity and high-speed belt conveyors are used to handle bulk materials transportation. One of the critical problems is how to deal with the dynamic stress of belt conveyors under high-speed condition during starting and braking stages. The traditional static design being based on statics regards the belt as rigid and seldom contains considerations of incorporating the dynamic behavior of the moving belt. Large safety factors are employed to accommodate most dynamic stresses in the belt. This would not only increase total cost but also give rise to system instability and higher dynamic stresses that may damage the belt, drums, idlers, bearings and other parts of the conveyor. Using dynamic analysis method can optimize parameters obtained from static design and improve system running stability, and safety factor and total cost can also be minimized.This thesis analyses the essential theories, basic methods and skills of virtual prototype technology, and researches on how to use the virtual prototype technology skill in the products design and test simulation with the help of the ADAMS(Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical System)which is a large-scale virtual product software. It also researches how to use the theory and skill of virtual Prototype Technology in the specific design through building the 3-dimemdional dynamic model by taking belt conveyors as the example. As a result , it can carry out the dynamic analysis and the optimizational design through ADAMS on the belt conveyor.
