With the progress of the industry and technology, belt conveyors as a kind of the main transport equipments of bulk materials are developed into the direction of long distance, high-speed, large capacity. At present, belt conveyors were generally designed by traditional methods and not through effective theory certification, but kept the enough strength and stiffness by increasing the safety factors through experience. So the used belt conveyors by traditional methods could not satisfy the need because of huge volume or unreasonable structure. Computer aided design (CAD) and Computer aided engineering (CAE) belong to modern design methods are important advanced ones for innovation design and used to improve greatly the design level, short the design time and reduce the expense. Therefore CAD and CAE methods were used to design belt conveyors.The entity models of the main parts of belt conveyor were established with Pro/ENGINEER software and transmitted to ADAMS design environment. The dynamics simulation and analysis of flexible multi-body systems of the belt conveyor were done by applying the restraint and load on the main parts.The finite model of the head frame of belt conveyor was set up by finite element method. The load of the head frame was analyzed by applying the 10-node tetrahedron unit to mesh the finite element model, then the finite element analysis of the head frame structure was done. The theoretic structure foundation was established for the optimal design of head frame.Then the optimal design mathematical modal of the head frame structure was build up with the APDL parameterized language from ANSYS. The structural optimal design program-ODPST was programmed based on the section parameters of the channel steel as design variables, the volume as objective variable, and the max deformation and stress as state variables. The structure optimal design of the head frame was finished. And the design results were reasonable.Applied the modern design methods of CAD and CAE, the optimal design of the main parts of belt conveyor was developed with lower max-stress, lighter weight and more reasonable structure.
