As a result of city development and the adjustment of the industrial configuration, a large amount of industrial buildings lost their functions for production purposes and, as a consequence, are deserted. At the same time, the rise of creative industry has a high demand on new building spaces. Converting the industrial heritage into the buildings that are suitable for creative industry can solve the above mentioned two problems simultaneously and effectively. This solution has the following three advantages. First, utilizing the old buildings can save resources. Second, the historic spirit can be extended. Third, it accelerates the renewal and development of old industrial district. This solution can create economic and social benefit, and matches the idea of sustainable development.Starting from this background, by analyzing many domestic and oversea practices of renewal design of the industrial heritage, together with relevant theories studies and researches, this thesis tries to discuss, both on the macroscopical and microcosmic levels, the methods of renewal design. On the macroscopical level of renewal design, the urban planning related renewal design issues are explored and discussed. The case study on the 798 district of Beijing city has a deep, detailed analysis and research on its current situation and city planning strategies. Based on the analysis and research, some general rules and strategies for city planning in renewal design are proposed. On the microcosmic level of renewal design, this thesis explores and discusses the following issues: the switches of functions; the recycle of components; the re-creation of architectural space and the human-oriented design. After the analysis and research of many existing practices, the switches of the functions can be categorized into seven types: exhibition, office, residential, theatre, food service, complex and landscape design. The structural components, windows, skylight windows can be kept for usage after cleaning and repairing. The service equipments in the industrial heritage can be used as statues or decorations to symbolize the industrial civilization. Memory bearing elements, such as banners, watchwords, etc, can be preserved and displayed as the carriers of history information. In renewal design, the re-creations of architectural spaces can be achieved by approaches such as separation, union, joint, expansion and re-design of exterior space. Detailed methods and approaches are summarized after the studies of domestic and oversea practices. The expressing methods for human-oriented design are explored and discussed from the aspects of dimension, material texture, color, and building physical environment. At the end of this thesis, the argumentations, from the perspectives of suitability, economics, environment and humanities, for the feasibility of the renewal design of industrial heritage are presented.
