Since the 1980s, great changes have been witnessed in the residental building, both in terms of quantity and quality. Rowhouse, once dispeared, has again shown upin Shanghai, breaking the unitary housing type of tier building and high buildingsince the establishment of the country. Rowhouse have been developed in Shanghairecently to meet peple's requirement of comfortable living and to use land efficiently.Compared to other types of housing, rowhouses have certain advantage and thusprovide a new choice of housing for peple and have a promising potential.This dissertation consists of five sections: The first section reviews the history ofrowhouse in shanghai. The second section classify the rowhouse in shanghai throughwidth, analyzes the traits and difference of rowhouse in Shanghai. The third sectiondiscusses how the difference of sizes, major function spaces, traffic space, accessorialspace may influence the economical of rowhouses. The fourth section discusses howsizes, internal functional spaces and non-internal fuctional spaces may influence thecomfort of rowhouses. The fifth section discuesses how flexibility, individualbuilding privacy and cluster privacy may influence the individuation of rowhouses.The following conclusions are made based on the above analysis. Althoughrowhouses are not the mainstream of residence in Shanghai, it is an indespensible partwhich enriches the catagories. During the 160 years since 1850s, the three stages ofShanghai's rowhouse development show the changes and development of Shanghai.Width is the key factor in rowhouse designing. Compactness, comfort andindividuation are three aspects deserving most attention and should be integratedmore in future design.
