Waterfront is the unique environmental resource of the city. It not only provides different conformation to the city, but also gives the new chances to the modern construction of the city. After a great deal of successful examples of oversea waterfront development took place, the cities in China have started to focus on the development of waterfront since 1990s. With the mass developments of waterfront in Chinese cities, the theory of waterfront development has become to the hotspot.The dissertation has begun from the waterfront developments in the city's overall view and used the characteristic of waterfront developments to construct the research frame. Aimed at the cases of both domestic and overseas waterfront developments to sum up the three characteristics of waterfront development: phases of development,functional and sustainable development. These analysis deepen the particularity of waterfront developments in China. According to the characteristics and theories of waterfront developments at current stage in our country, summarized that waterfront's planning should not just restrict to physical form, but also recognize from the angle of macro, strategic and environmental, and accomplish a forward-looking research about the integrated impact of city's space adjustment and extended on the waterfront. Under the precondition of cooperating with environment, research has made the targets of different functional waterfronts and given the orient of development in order to impel the comprehensive, balanced, sustainable development of city waterfront.The research has used the case which has taken place in shanghai to anatomized the theory of waterfront development and control that mentioned above. Finally, combine the plan of ZhenJiang's waterfront development with the conclusion of this article to give the suggestion and provide controlling strategy of construction.
