Urban public transportation is a very important part of traffic and transportation, a product of urban development and the crucial link of social production and circulation areas. All countries in the world in the development of urban public transportation are faced with the rapid growth of vehicle, serious urban traffic congestion and the declining level of public transport services. Therefore, the effective evaluation of the urban public traffic system, the analysis of the current problems and the feasible measures are the only way to the raise the level of traffic service in current.Evaluation of urban public traffic based on GIS has incomparable advantages than tradition evaluation method. GIS-based evaluation needs a great deal of spatial analysis on the support of urban public traffic database, so this paper first established a basal database of the urban public traffic. Second, this paper established an urban public traffic comprehensive evaluation system, analyzed these criteria and delimited the standards of these criteria. The traditional method of calculation with route criteria are complex, an improved algorithm of route criteria is presented with GIS. Third, the comprehensive multi-level fuzzy evaluation method was established, and was used to evaluate the urban public traffic. Determining the population density, the bus network density, the line overlap factor and the stop coverage as four clustering factor, use gray cluster analysis to regional evaluation. Finally, this paper use Beijing as an example to testify the evaluation of urban public traffic based on GIS.
