A Preliminary Study On Reclamation Of Brownfields

Land is the effective component of urban ecological environment and is also an important carrier of urban functions. While with the arrival of postindustrial era and the decline of the traditional industry, in the late 20th century, since the acquisition of resources and energy, urban construction, industrial pollution and illogical waste disposal etc, there came out a mass of brownfields which directly or indirectly affected the quality of urban ecological environment and human health; especially, since urban restructure and urban space arrangement, the brownfields which located in the urban center or gathering areas of industry and commerce had gradually showed the potential value of economy and culture after abandoning,ruining,dilapidating and changing of use. So the effective reclamation towards brownfields can not only improve the urban environment, enhance the value of land and increase recreation sites, but also ease the tensions of urban land use, optimize the pattern of urban space and promote urban renewal and economic development.In developed countries such as Europe and the United States, the practical experience in reclamation of brownfields had been for many years. The aspects of brownfields identification, pollution control, risk assessment and management, engineering and technical measures, laws and regulations, public participation, financing mechanisms and ecological landscape design etc had formed a integrated system.By comparison, the study on reclamation of brownfields still has large gaps in China. How to reasonably and effectively control and manage the process of reclamation of brownfields; learn successful experience from developed Western countries; search for design concept about Chinese cultural and geographical characteristics, will become an important subject on urban sustainable development.In view of this, the paper elaborated on the concept, characteristics, background and the reasons for reclamation of brownfields, comprehensively summarized the ideological and theoretical basis on reclamation of brownfields. At the same time, the paper analyzed the general steps and obstacles in the process of reclamation of brownfields in developed countries such as Europe and the United States. Finally the paper concluded methods and prerequisites to good reclamation of brownfields and common approachs to dealing with landscape of brownfields ecologically.
