In modern industrialization, assembly is an important stage in product design, and a final stage to get better product quality. Virtual assembly provides a new low-cost, quick means to solve the problem of product assembly, so it can be widely used in virtual technology field and simulation field. Because of that, virtual assembly technology is researched, and applied in LED sorting machine.Firstly, it's known that there exists error in production process and interference fitting in assembly process. The correlation function of several typical connecting ways is established in the paper by revealing the intrinsic relationship between the two phenomena and left (right) side-distance correlation function in extension theory. Based on that, a new modular division method is proposed and put used into the drive-testing of LED sorting machine.Secondly, the assembly sequence of the module is planned by particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the components are encoded through integer coding. The objective function is constructed with the assembly stability, the correlation function between parts, and the assembly sequence feasibility. The PSO planning result is feasible tested by the simulation of assembly processes of each module in DELMIA.Thirdly, the five basic extension transformations are presented simply. Based of the reasons that bring the interferences, transformations are classified into three kinds: the matter-element transformation of part design, the transposition of assembly sequence, and the add-delete transformation of modular division. Then transformation means and processes of extension are proposed to solve the problem of assembly interference.Finally, the assembly process of the whole LED sorting machine is simulated in DELMIA, and recorded by multimedia format. So the visible assembly is realized. Results of simulation show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.
