With the expansion of the city scale and the increase of the population in China, the urban residents travel more and more frequently. The serious traffic problems have influenced the development of the city seriously, and need us to find methods to solve these problems, especially to solve the problem of passenger transport. The research on the characteristics of urban residents travel is an indispensable fundamental work. Urban residents travel has the distribution of time and space. Different travel purposes and different traffic modes have different travel distance. This paper focuses on the characteristics of the urban residents travel distance which is influenced by many factors, mainly including residents travel subject, traffic modes, urban configuration, economic level and so on. It is very important to research on these influencing factors. At first this paper researched the subject psychology and personality characteristics to analyze the characteristic of urban travel distance, then examined different modes of transportation which impacts the travel distance, then researched the deep-seated patterns of urban space. Finally it researched how the economic level influence the travel distance. By analyzing the impact of various factors, we proposed the concept named travel distance impact level and established models. We attempted to explore urban planning, transport planning and residents travel to keep abreast of the times, making the new balance between supply and demand. It proposed suggestions to ease the traffic pressure and reduce unnecessary travel distance. With the progress of social economy and the development of science and technology, the factors which influence the residents travel will be changed constantly. Therefore, we need to understand the mechanism and test the theory and the models in the practice, then correct it. We can use the theory and the models to guidance practice correctly.
