Channel is an important part of waterway transportation system, and the waterway capacity reflects the development level of the shipping industry. As one of important factors which influence port's whole function, port fairway plays a vital role in vessel berthing system. In order to study influencing factors and the computation way of seaport fairway capacity, this paper does intensive and directed study on designing port fairway capacity.Referencing relevant conceptions and scientific research achievements about water transport engineering and road traffic engineering, this paper determined the elements and boundary of vessel berthing system. Then according to the definition, classification and relevant theory of port fairway capacity, the paper pointed out the factors which influence the capacity. Researching the current situation and development tendency of the shipping industry, the thesis putted forward standard ships for the 4 mainstream vessel types, and proposed the way of vessel type conversion based on that. And then adopting the theory of discrete event system simulation and taking Rockwell Arena 10.0 (viz. a visual interactive simulation software) as the simulation platform, this paper built the simulation model of port vessel berthing system based on standard vessels. By stating and analyzing the simulation data, the fairway capacity basing on simplex vessels and different service levels of a certain container seaport is calculated, then conversion coefficients and their expressions were gived. Combining the port fairway capacity influenced by mixed traffic, the thesis proposed influence coefficients of port fairway capacity.Port vessel berthing system is a stochastic multi-level queuing system which is very complex and dynamic. As a vital important part of the system, the port fairway capacity is influenced by many complex factors. In favor of simplifying problem to build simulation model, the mixed traffic in port fairway is ignored in the study while modeling the system. The study quantified factors such as ships arrival regularity, fairway length, berth number, loading & unloading efficiency of machines and natural conditions in port, and integrated them with the simulation model. In this way, this paper carried on the beneficial exploration and proposed a new method and thought on port fairway capacity.
