Along with the popularity of automobile and the increasing speed, consumers begin to pay attention to the safety and comfortableness of the automobile, so ergonomics becomes more and more important in the R&D process of a new car. After several years'development, automobile ergonomics has formed its own standards, theories and methods, which play an important guiding role in the package design of the automobile.In recent years, automobile industry has been promoted enormously because of the development of computer technology and the application of parallel engineering, which shortened and reduced the R&D cycle and cost effectively, and these have become the inevitable trend in the automobile R&D process. Therefore, the traditional method of automobile package design has been replaced gradually by the 3D virtual method. The digital manikin based on the human body parameters has become an essential tool to design, analysis, and assess the man-machine system.The standard of human physical dimensions is the foundation of building up the digital manikin. Among the foreign standards, ISO 3411 is a widely used one which has 4 editions: ISO 3411:1975, ISO 3411:1982, ISO 3411:1995 and ISO 3411:2007. In China, the present standard of human physical dimensions is GB-10000-88. During the past 20 years, human physical dimensions of the Chinese people have already changed, but the standard has not been updated promptly. Lacking of updated standard, many industries can only use the physical dimensions measured by themselves or foreign standards in the product design, which seriously restrict the industry development in our country, and make the product not satisfy the requirement of physical dimensions very well.The prosperous of automobile market in China impels the foreign companies to introduce more new cars. Simultaneously, the self-owned brand automobile companies also increased their R&D intensity, but because of the limited R&D capability, most of these companies'products are entrusted to foreign company for development. Even developed independently, the standards used in the design process are foreign ones. Because of the differences in physical dimensions between different counties and the lack of Chinese manikin in majority of mainstream CAD software, the new cars developed by the foreign company can not meet the requirement of Chinese people's physical dimension, and the anticipated requests of safety and comfortableness can not be achieved.CATIA is an integrated CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM software, which is applied widely in the domestic automobile industry. Its ergonomics module can establish the relationship between engineering and ergonomics design to make the proposal more perfect. But Chinese manikin is not provided in current CATIA software, so to a certain degree, the application range of this module is limited.In this paper, we found the dimensional changes by comparing every human physical dimension in ISO 3411 1985 with that in ISO 3411 2007, then modified the dimensions in GB-10000-88 to get a new standard, which is the foundation of building the Chinese manikin in CATIA ergonomics module.The eye ellipse is a very important tool in the package design, and it provides a scientific vision reference to the research of the automobile visual field. Although the digital manikin's function is getting more and more comprehensive, the eye ellipse is still irreplaceable. At present the eye ellipse is built basing on the standard of SAE J941, and if the car aimed mainly at the Chinese market is designed with this eye ellipse without change, the potential deign deficiency is inevitable. Research shows that the length of eye ellipse's major axis is determined by the average height and the standard deviation of the target population. In this paper, the Chinese eye ellipse in 95th percentile was established based on the modified standard and the formula which is used to position the ellipse with the AHP as the reference point was deduced. The eye ellipse and its position formula provide reference for the design and check work of the automobile visual field.Parameterized model which is used to calculate the blind area in the display zone of the dashboard is built, basing on the Chinese eye ellipse in 95th percentile and its position formula. When the design parameter is changed, the blind area will update synchronously, and this characteristic of the model is helpful to avoid redundant design, reduce designers' burden and save time.H point is an important reference point in the in the package design of the automobile, and the driver's operating convenience and comfortableness are inflected by this point. The present reference used in the H point layout process is the comfortable H point position curves in the standard of SAE J1517, which are not suitable for the Chinese physical dimensions. Therefore, the comfortable H point position basing on the Chinese manikin is studied in this paper. Through adjusting the position of the male manikin's H point in 95th, 90th, 50th, 10th percentile and of the female manikin's in 5th percentile, the coordinates of the positions that satisfy the requirements of comfortableness and perfect visual field are recorded. In the MATLAB software, the formulas of the H points'position are fitted based on the coordinates and the curves of the formulas are plotted in the same coordinate system. The region enclosed by the curves is the set of the satisfied H points. Using the same method, the region of the American manikin's H point is calculated and the contrast is made to find the difference between the two kinds of manikin.In this paper we modified the dimensions in GB-10000-88 by analyzing the standards of ISO 3411 in 1985 and 2007 version. The modified dimensions could temporarily solve the problem that the present standard is out of date, and have reference value before the issuance of the new standard.
