As the development of the world economic globalization, Maritime transportation business, which carry major import and export transport task for many country, increased significantly in recent years. Shipping is playing an ever important role in international trade. As the shipping industry is a high-risk industries. The issues, how to ensure the crew members, vessels and cargo security, improve the efficiency of service, was concerned by the shipping companies.In order to solve maritime security issues, the international shipping industry has developed a series of international safety conventions, rang from SOLAS Convention, 1914 to MARPOL Convention, 1973. Most of these conventions only concern the ship design, navigation rules, equipment performance, operational rules, etc, and provide a series of security technical specifications, however, shipping company prefer a set of management solution which can manage marine equipment and structural components. Only after the condition of ship's equipment status, structure corrosion and damage is accessed completely, the ship company can custom more effective management program, which can guide crews to carry out ship's equipment maintenance. Meanwhile, repair plan is customized ahead based on components status. All of this works are done for improving service efficiency and ship safety.Maintenance Management System, used in shipping company, bases on the ship repair and maintenance system (CWBT), GB/T16558.1-7 (2009). Because of the complexity of hull structure and the large number of components, it makes unable to describe the structural condition of the hull accurately and efficiently with the traditional two-dimensional relational database. Therefore these management systems, in use for decades, are hardly to meet the challenges of ship structure and coating conditions.A new ship maintenance method, which is based on the 3D ship model and used in the structure maintenance and coating examination, is presented in this paper in order to overcome the disadvantage of the traditional approach. In this method, the 3D ship structure model is created through customization and secondary development of CATIA, and the properties as well as the status information of the structure are stored and accessed with SQL Server database. The ship structure and coating is managed with software based on development of 3Dxml model by VB.net. With this method, ship structure and coating could be viewed from the 3D model intuitively, and it is also possible to see the corrosion and damage of the whole ship structure visually, which could greatly improve the management level of the shipping company.
