Knowledge Engineering System (abbreviated is KES) is one key component of systematic informationization that industrial enterprises are engaged in practice. KES plays a role as a bridge, standing between Product Design System and Knowledge Database. It is able to support product design concurrently, quickly search for engineering data, and guarantee design quality efficiently.So far, Knowledge Engineering Applications have formed into one of the new strategic growth points in Industrial Design development. Among these applications, the modeling methodology based on Knowledge Engineering is leading the innovation intent in Computer- Aided design (CAD) area, which is bearing broad application platform and extending to prosperous development vision. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) requires subjecting to higher level in improving the efficiency of engineering design, and integrating management of knowledge, experience and skills.This paper research work is based on one Fortune 500 construction machinery enterprise in Suzhou, by deeply studying the theories of KES, establishing the infrastructure of KES, and accomplishing to implement KES with good results in this company.The paper main purposes and tasks include:1. Systematic and comprehensive understanding KES, probing into its current development status and future trends in China and abroad, and pointing out the essentialness of establishing KES in industrial enterprises.2. Setting up the guidelines for KES design, based on that, establishing the general system infrastructure. Analyzing and designing the software structure, specific functions of the KES modules, Data Structure, Data Interfaces and other related aspects, furthermore achieving the integrative KES model.3. According to Software Engineering concepts, conducting Demand Analysis, Outline Design, Detailed Design and Testing for KES project. Implementing the system by applying Browser/Serve pattern finally.4. Applying Knowledgeware tools effectively solves the generic and ultimate modeling issue with automatic configuration, allowing KES layer information interaction and sharing in the whole lifecycle.5. Summarizing all the work for the paper. Advancing the idea of involving Strategic Decision Support System into KES in the future.
