As a key role in solving today's traffic problems in metropolitan area, metro has developed very fast in Shanghai, and has become on of the most frequently used traffic methods, Metro has played a more and more important role in our daily lives. As a major method in connecting metro networks with outside city, metro station co-evolves quickly with metro networks towards more complicated. Metro station itself has become more complicated in both traffic methods included and functions lie in, and metro station has become an integral part of the surrounded building complex in many ways. With the rapid development and evolvement of metro station and surrounding underground space, which are becoming more and more massive, complicated and functionally complex, people will find it more difficult in wayfinding experience. This situation has cost people not only time and money but also psychologically, and has reduced the wayfinding efficiency of metro station. As a key element in wayfinding, especially in underground environment, the space cognition and pedestrian sign system are of great importance to study. This study takes People's Square Subway Station, Xujiahui Subway Station and Century Avenue Subway Station as an example, which can represent the status quo of Shanghai's Subway Station. And used many methods to evaluate the wayfinding environment of studying subject. Through the investigation of pedestrian sign system which is critical to wayfinding process, this research showed the status quo of wayfinding environment in People's Square Subway Station as well as the problems lies in.This research showed the relationship between space cognition, sign system and wayfinding, which is, space is the most important factor in wayfinding while sign system is of great help to wayfinding process, especially in underground environment. Space and sign system should be combined to solve the wayfinding problems in subway station, furthermore, improvement suggestions are also respectively provided, which is divided into two parts by large: space and sign system. Space includes spatial layout, division, circulation and enterances, sign system includes layout strategy, content planning, maps and stairs location. Also, the data collected during investigation can serve as base data for future research and references for metro constructions in other cities in China.
