With the implementation of the development strategies of western China and small towns, numerous of mountainous towns in China have the historic opportunity of Reconstruction and Development. However, most of these areas base on traditional agriculture, have scarce land resources and fragile ecological environment, which make it much more difficult and complicated in facing the Urbanization. In the mountainous towns, the central area is the core of the whole city and the representative of city image. Generally, it's the cradle of a town, where have a long history and play a key role in the formation and development of small towns. In this foundation, the town thus develops its overall shape. Its features well representing physiognomy of the whole town, centralizing the main functions of mountainous towns and becoming the major places of public activities. Therefore, constructing the old central area of mountainous towns, can benefit a lot to the economic development of small towns, improving urban image and people's living environment as well as enhancing the attractiveness of small towns and the mountain. However, because of the uniqueness of the geographical environment, local culture and economic foundation, it's important to look for some appropriate urban design strategies and methods.Chongqing, basically belonging to mountain regions, most of its small towns have typical mountainous features. Therefore, the study and analysis of old central area of Chongqing's mountainous small towns , which have great regional characteristics, will be a significant reference to the construction and development of other mountainous areas. This thesis, through the inductive analysis of morphological characteristics of the growth, development patterns and characteristics of the induction center, analyzed the problems existing in these central areas. Through referring to theories and experiences of urban design of general small towns and mountainous cities, summarized the urban design objectives, principles and strategies of central areas of mountainous small towns. In this way, to provide a holistic, multi-leveled, and practical operational reference to its urban design. The full text of the main content is divided into five chapters:The first chapter introduces the background, the subjects were defined and clarified the purpose and significance of proposed research methods and frameworks. Chapter II aimed at the research area, detailed analysis the basic characteristics of mountainous towns and form generation and development models, summarized the classification and characteristics of the mountain town center area. And carefully described situation of the small mountain town in old city and analyzed its existing problems.Chapter III, basing on research of the old city center of the mountain towns in Chapter II, proposed characteristics of rehabilitation of urban design. According to the problems and uniqueness of its central areas in features and urban design, proposed a renewal target of these areas.Chapter IV is the focus point of the paper, based on chapter II and Chapter III, further proposed design principles. Based on the design principles, the integration of design strategies and methods of natural environment of the mountainous cities, the unique culture expression of public space systems, presented the strategies and methods of construction and resource integration based on the city's compact urban mode design strategies and methods.Chapterâ…¤, analysed a case of Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, for further study of the paper presents strategies and methods.Base on a large amount of research and analysis, the writer hopes that the thesis can be a forthgoer in the research of urban design of central areas of mountainous small towns and can offer some useful guidance and reference to the design practice.
