Compaction is vital to the construction of asphalt concrete pavement. The intensity, stability and durability of pavement are affected by the Compaction quality to a large extent. A lot of investigation and study indicate that one of the important reasons, which induced some express to the serious early damages, is the poor compaction quality.The paper has analyzed the compaction mechanism of asphalt concrete pave, presented some compactors in common use and their mechanism in the perspective from mechanics, which has provided academic base for perfecting the compaction of asphalt mixture. This paper also has analyzed the density rate curve of SGC (Superpave Gratory Compactor), found we could use the information of the density rate curve of SGC to evaluate the compaction property of asphalt mixture.Using the information of the density rate curve of SGC, the paper has analyzed the effect of temperature and gradation to the compaction property, and has indicated that when the temperature of compaction is at a certain extent, the compaction quality is best.The paper has summarized the compaction technology to harsh mixture and weak mixture. In addition, in the construction process of the asphalt concrete pavement there are some compaction damages, such as microcrack, surface wave, particle breakage, et al. In this paper, the author has investigated the forming reasons to each damage, and then proposed some efficient methods to each damage.
