The motor instruments are important windows for drivers to know the vehicle's internal state. The pointer instruments with complex structure are often used as traditional instruments, which have a little information displayed and a high failure rate. With advanced technology of modern automobile emerging, especially with the rapid development of the new energy environment-friendly electric vehicles and automotive electronic and informatization, it makes the pointer instruments have been far from satisfying the new technology and high-precision requirements of modern vehicles. And it is imperative to do the technological innovation of instrumentation systems and to develop a new generation of intelligent motor instruments.In this paper pure electric vehicle pilot car is used as a research object and the research and development of automobile intelligent instrument are done based on Shaanxi provincial key scientific and technological projects. In the article, the overall scheme design of the intelligent instrument is firstly proposed through the analysis on the control circuit of the pure electric automobile's electronic control unit and draw lessons from domestic and international advanced technology. According to scheme design, the hardware and software developer platforms are built, including the selection of main control module, the expansion of CAN bus interface on the instrument, the kernel customized of WinCE operating system and the installation of Embedded configuration software MCGS. Then the application software of intelligent instrument is developed, including research on the data processing algorithms and the interface design of instrument graphic. Finally, the intelligent instrument is taken to laboratory simulation debug and system joint debug. Through the debugging, this instrument works stably and reliably.The vehicle information in graphical and digital display is fulfilled in the intelligent instrument of pure electric vehicle which has data saving function. Compared with the traditional instrument, the intelligent instrument uses the more advanced embedded processors and WinCE operating systems to build intelligent instrument system software and hardware platforms, and the data processing is quicker and more accuracy to achieve a multi-purpose. Also, because the embedded instrument platform is rich in resources, which makes intelligent instrument has good scalability.
