A transportation junction has an important meaning in nowadays city. In the initial stage of urban development, railway stations were the transporting nodes of passengers and cargoes. At that time, a city was often developed with a centre of a railway station, while manufacturing and distributing regions were formed around it. Hence, a meaningful spatial link between the urban centre and the railway station usually exists. But with the growing of a city, the development of the transportation junction areas was becoming uneven with the development of economy and configuration of the city. Therefore, it is no doubt that spatial renewal in transportation junctions of a city is rather urgent.In order to comprehensively understand the importance of renewing the transportation junction areas of a city, this dissertation reviewed relavant literatures in this area, analysed and summarized the influencing factors associated with spatial renewal in transportation junctions, and finally provided practical methods for spatial renewal of city transport junction areas based on pilot studies. The purpose of this dissertation is to systematically research the approaches of spatial renewal in city transport junction areas for providing a useful reference in the practice of future.The active mechanism is important in this study, which includes the explicit forces, including economic, urban and social factors, and the implicit impacts, which are from the inner influences of transportation junctions through the progress of the transportation technology and the system reform of the transport department. With the co-effects of explicit forces and implicit impacts, it is possible to renew the spaces of the transportation junction areas of a city. However, as its dual founctions of transportation and municipalization, spatial renewal of transportation junction areas in a city is rather complexity and indetermination, where a conflict between the use of a land and the spatial form of a transportation junction area in a city exists.In sum, three princples are proposed in this dissertation, they are integrity, multiplicity, publicity. Based on these principles and polit studies studied in this dissertation, four approaches have been concluded, including land use, function constitution, spatial order, and spatial integration. For land use, three different measurements could be considered, namely replacing, decomposing and implanting. For function constitution, in order to create continuous dynamy for transportation junction areas, rationality and multiplicity of the function constitution for transportation junction areas and a mix function at every spatial level should be achieved by confirming the main and auxiliary functions in terms of manufacturing development. Finally, for spatial order and spatial integration, a union made of each element from transportation junction areas will be created through rearranging spatial orders and integrating various functional spacese. Then the function constitution and spatial forms would be much efficiently integrated into the transportation junction areas of a city, which would make the area becoming a real activity place of the city.
