Fatty liver syndrome (FLS) models were prepared by feeding the hens ,which were 300-day-old and averaging 2000-2500 g of body weight,on high-fat diet. We studied the curative and the preventative effects of a Chinese herbal medicine prescription "San Zheng Gan Tai" on FLS and the changes in the fat metabolism of the sick hens through testing the TG, TC and the GPT, GOT levels in the serum and the liver fat content, the liver/body weight ratio and also through testing the pathological changes of the liver. The results showed that: 1. The levels of TG, TC and GPT, GOT in the serum and the liver fat content, the liver/body weight ratio of the model group were significantly higher when compared with the control group (PO.01 or PO.05). Fat drop was seen in the liver cells which were swelling observed under the light microscope. Three high-fat diets were used and the model made by high-fat diet is more ideal. 2. The preventative group was fed on high-fat diet with an addition of "San Zheng Gan Tai", "San Zheng Gan Tai" can significantly lower the liver fat content and the TG, TC in the serum and also can remarkably lessen the steatosis degree. Group D is the best during the experiment, laying-egg ratio is 71.78% and at the end of the experiment the liver fat content is 27.74%, TG, TC ( mg/dl ) is 662.16+177.98, 137.50+25.69, GPT, GOT ( U/L ) is 16.69+0.45, 210.5+43.54,respectively.AH these are lower than that of model B at the same period (PO.01), compared with healthy group A, only TC has significant difference (PO.05), others' differences are not significant (P>0.05), and compared with positive control group F, differences are very significant (PO.01). 3. Cure with "San Zheng Gan Tai" not only significantly lowered the liver fat content and the TC, TG, GPT, GOT of serum but also remarkably lessened the stealosis degree. The curative effect of group D is the best, at the end of the experiment the laying-egg ratio is recovered to 50%, the liver fat content is lowered to 26.7%, TC, TG, GPT,GOT of serum is lower than that of the model group at the same period (PO.01). Compared with healthy group only TC has significant difference (PO.05), none of the other indexes were significantly different (PX).05).All these results implied that (1) FLS models can be made successfully by feeding the hens on high-fat diet; (2) Chinese herbal medicine "San Zheng Gan Tai" can raise the laying-egg ratio; (3) "San Zheng Gan Tai" has significant preventative and curative effects on FLS, and (4) "San Zheng Gan Tai" can prevent the liver cell injury.
