In order to provide the scientific basis for the Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) of Sichuan Yujin, we started our study with the textual research of Radix Curcumae to clarify historical development. The recent literature of Radix Curcumae on resource distributing, harvesting & processing, chemical composition and pharmacological effect were also studied to elucidate the utilization of the drug.The main producing area in guangxi province was found to have changed in our investigation of crude drug resource. The production has declined in the former main producing area, even not cultivate any more. Due to man-made or geographical factors, there were small yield in the wenzhou and qianwei area. However, the cultivation in the jinma-river drainage area not only has a long history but also has a bigger scale.The determination of water, methanol-soluble extractive, total ash and acid-insoluble ash show that only a few samples' water beyond the standard prescribed in the Chinese pharmacopoeia, all samples' total ash accord with the standard and the acid-insoluble ash is all less than 1.0%.So we suggest the acid-insoluble ash in Radix Curcumae should be controlled to no more than 1.0%. We also established the testing measure of methanol-soluble extractive and suggest it should be no less than 3.70% in huangsi yujin, 2.90% in lvsi yujin.The TLC identification condition are screened in our study, we also compared the chromatogram of different species of Radix Curcumae. Though the determination of volatile oil, curcuminoids and curcumin, we found the content of chemical composition differed greatly in huangsi yujin and lvsi yujin. We suggest the content of volatile oil, curcuminoids and curcumin should be no less than 1.3%, 0.07% and 1.11 % in huangsi yujin, and the content of volatile oil also should be no less than 0.15% in lvsi yujin.The tests of heavy metals and residual pesticides in Radix Curcumae show that Cu,Cd,Hg,Pb and As as well as dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT), benzene hexachloride (BHC), pentachloronitro benzene (PCNB) etc. accord with "Standards of Green Importing and Exporting Medicinal Plants and Their Products".During the research of optimum picking time, we take the total amount of cucuminoids as evaluating index, integrate the results of volatile oil's determination and micro-observation on the root tuber. Thus we made sure the optimum picking time and found it will have a little difference if the species are different.Combining the yield and quality, the suitable cultivating measures are established though the investigation of planting date, amount of seeds, plant density, soil environment and fertilization.
