The paper comes from the project of National Foundation of Science-"Research of sugar cane harvester motive mechanism and virtual design". The paper mainly studies the innovation design and simulation research of cane top cutting mechanism, which is the bottleneck part of sugar cane harvester. Cane top cutting mechanism of large size scale sugar cane harvester in foreign countries is on foreside of the total harvester. Cane top is cut in sugar cane's standing state. Operator decides the cutting length and adjusts the cutting tool position through hydraulic mechanism. In reality the height of cutting tool can't be adjusted ever and again because height of canes are different, which causes inaccuracy. Most cane harvesters have no top cutting mechanism in China. So developing cane top cutting mechanism that can judge the cutting position automatically is very important.1. According to the measure data of canes' diameter in different sections, character of sugar cane's growth is found. It is that the size of top of sugar cane's diameter is comparatively invariableness and is about half size of sugar cane's middle diameter. So the article brings forward a new way for designing cane top cutting mechanism. That is distinguishing the position of cane's top with sugar canes' diameter.2. The paper analyzes the function of cane top cutting mechanism through conceptual design. Three innovation mechanisms being based on the same principle are developed which are side-hanging helix cane top cutting mechanism, horizontal helix cane top cutting mechanism and vertical cane top cutting mechanism.3. Configuration design and basic motion simulation analysis are done for two helix cane top cutting mechanisms. Experiment device is designed and experiment is done for side-hanging helix cane top cutting mechanism. By experiment the theory of cane top cutting is validated.4. For vertical helix cane top cutting mechanism virtual design is made and then virtual prototype technique is applied to carry through detailed simulation analysis. The mechanism chiefly parameters such as bevel angle of sugar cane, wimble roller's bottom angle, the position of holding strip affect top cutting capability are gained. Construction optimize is done and then optimum vertical helix cane top cutting mechanism is validated by experiment.The paper puts forward a new way to design cane top cutting mechanism and innovation design and simulation analysis are done by virtual prototype technique, which is of reference value for developing cane top cutting mechanism for the future.
