Mastitis in dairy cows is one of mammary gland diseases caused by pathogenic microorganism, and leads to great economic loss in dairy production. This study was tested on total 320 cows and 1150 mammary areas at 12 dairy farms in 4 central farming region in shan'xi province through CMT(California Mastitis Test)method to investigate the situation of mastitis disease. Results showed that the incidence of head numbers and mammary areas in subclinical mastitis was 65.31% and 52.09% respectively. Isolation from milk of dairy cows with subclinical mastitis and identification indicated the main microbial pathogens belonged to three species: Streptococcus, E. coli and Staphylococcus, incidence of which was 32.81%. 23.44%. and 35.94% respectively. Antibiotics susceptibility test which was evaluated with two-fold dilution method showed their resistance patterns were serious. There were more than 80% pathogen isolated from cows with subclinical mastitis resistant to penicillin, streptomycin and sulfonamide. The resistant rate of the pathogens to kanamycin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin maintained in a relatively low level. The traditional Chinese herbal medicines were selected on the basis of the prevention and cure to the .mastitis. The Chinese herbal formular one was constitute of rhubarb, glauber's salt, frankincense, myrrh and borneol. Herbal formular two was burdock, taraxacum, angelica dahurica, forsythia, fritillaria, frifiUaria thuubergii, radix paeoniae rubra. Herbal formular three was including of honeysuckle, forsythia and taraxacum. The Chinese herbal extracts were obtained with different methods. The three herbal extracts were measured through three sides separately. The antibacterial activity was evaluated with two-fold dilution method after the three herbal extracts obtained respectively. The antiinflammatory activity was measured through determining the effect on mice's auricle swell caused by dimethylbenzene. The immune function activity included detection of phagocytic activity of celiac macrophage and weight of thymus and spleen. The results showed that the three group of herbal formula could improve the mice's immune function through enhancing the phagocytic activity of celiac macropHage and weight indexes of thymus and spleen, and inhibit the growth of the three main pathogens isolated from cows with subclinical mastitis. The anti-inflammation tests also revealed that herbal mixture has significant inhibiting effect on mice's auricle swell caused both by croton oil and dimethylbenzene. The whole effects of the three group of herbal formula were different significantly from the other groups (P<0.01).
