As a main annual forage crop in alpine grassland area, oat (Avena sativa L.) plays a vital role in local animal husbandry duo to its high biomass, good quality and high adaptability. However, the intermixture and degredation among local varieties, unavailable background and poor adaptability of introduced ones resulted in a relatively backward situation of oat production in China. This makes it useful to collect oat germplasm at honme and abroad, evaluate them according to their botanical chanteristics, productivities, quality and stress resistance, select superior cultivars to replace degraded ones and help to improve alpine animal husbandry development, increase farmer and herder's income and protect ecological environment. The experiment was conducted on a deer farm in GanSu HuaZang in 2004-2005. Twenty-six oat varieties from different sources were used in completely random design. The gray system theory was utilized in a comprehensive evaluation based on botanical characteristics, productivity, biological resistance and lodgging resistance. The results were as follows.1. The regression analysis of 10 botanical characteristics and fresh yield showed that the number of the green leaves, effective tiller number, stem diameter and single stem weight contributed most to the fresh yield. Result of cluster analysis indicated that the varieties that cluster 1 including Qingyongjiu 409, Qingyongjiu 94, Qingyongjiu 709, Qingyongjiu 440, Chudao, Qingyongjiu 343 and Qingyongjiu 424 were much better as far as their botanical chanacteristics were concerned.2. The result of the growth speed showed that Qingyongjiu 478, Qingyongjiu 94, Qingyongjiu 709 and 409 grew much faster from seeding stage to grain filling stage, indicating their strong adaption to the environment of Tian Zhu region.3. The yields of 26 varieties have been analysised by the way of SSR and the results showed that the yield of Qingyongjiu 316,Qingyongjiu 409,Qingyongjiu 118,Qingyongjiu 709 are higer than Qing-yin1,Qingyongjiu 12,Qingyongjiu 877,Tian oat及xuan 18 remarkablely. Qingyongjiu 316 has the higest yield of 5.49kg/m2, while Tian oat has the lowest yield of only 2.97 kg/m2 almost half of the316.4. In the 26 oat varieties, Tian oat gave the leat stem-to-leaf ratio, its leaves were fleshier and broader, and the proportion of the leaves was larger, showing a higher feed...
