Toona sinensis is one kind of the endemic precious trees which grow fast and distributes extensively in China. The seeds of Toona sinensis from 14 places distributed in 13 provinces all over the country were collected, due to the present situation of its extensive distribution, various ecotypes, less of plant areas and low level well-bred. In the paper, the seeds and one-year-old seedling of different provenances and individuals were studied as subjects, to analyze seed quality and measure the growth characteristics and adaptability of seedling, aiming at choosing Toona sinensis seedling with the features of grow-fast, productive and good adaptability. The variation of seeds of Toona sinensis were founded on the research basement of configuration and seed quality, which would support the reference for seeds allocation; the superior provenances were selected which adapted to Jiangsu province, after evaluating comprehensively all the seedling index with the methods of correlation analysis and factor analysis; at the meantime, the growth features of seedling were mastered, which would support theory foundations for the management of seedling stage of Toona sinensis, and which would contribute to protect and utilize Toona sinensis. The main results were as follows:1. The difference of the seeds size in different provenances was remarkable.2. The seed germination rate of different provenances of Toona sinensis was high. However, the rate of field germination rate was lower than seed germination rate and varied from 25.33 percent to 55.33 percent. The rate of germination was in accordance with the seed vigor. In practice, the measuration of the rate of seed germination can be substituted for that of seed vigor.3.The difference of the nutrient ingredient contents of Toona sinensis seeds of different provenances was remarkable, among which the content of protein, soluble sugar, amylum, free amino acids and crude fat respectively varied from 12.514 mg/g to 93.191mg/g, from 0.048mg/g to 0.084mg/g, from 0.644% to 1.804%,from 1.545 to 3.324mg/g,and from 26.407% to 38.158%.4. The difference of the height, basal diameter and biomass of one-year-old seedling from different provenances of Toona sinensis was evidently significant. The growth rhythm appeared as the obvious S-growth curve.5.The growth stage of one-year-old seedling might be divided into 4 stages, that was to say, emergence stage, young seedling stage,fast-growing stage and late growth stage.6. On the basement of experiment of seedling cold tolerance, it was found that the cold tolerance of the seedling from 8 provenances of Toona sinensis was good, and hibernated safely.
