As a method of agamogenesis, cutting has very important values on keeping the high quality of alfalfa, accelerating the breed of alfalfa and fostering fine breeds. This experiment studied the series of factors which influenced the capacity of cutting of alfalfa. The main conclusions were as follows:1. Seven species of alfalfa were studied. The result showed that WL-323 and LuBao had the better rooting capacity, their rooting rates were both above 90%. WL-323 had the best rooting capacity in all the seven species, its rooting rate was up to 92.5%. The rooting rates of Super 13R and AiBo were around 89%. They were worse than WL-323 and LuBao on many aspects of the root properties'analysis, as a result, their rooting capacity was worse. The rooting rates of MuGe and WeiDuoliya were around 70%. JuRen201 had the worst rooting capacity, its rooting rate was only 65.4%.2. Different parts of alfalfa stem had been studied, the result showed that: The middle part had the best rooting capacity. After cutting, the middle part had the most new leaves, and it had better effects on rooting rate, Index of root system and dry weight of roots. The middle part was also significantly (P<0.05 or P<0.01) better than other parts on many aspects of the root properties'analysis. The bottom part had worse rooting capacity, and the top part was the worst.3. Different methods of cutting were studied, the result showed that cleaved incision cutting method had the best rooting capacity. It had better effects on rooting rate,Index of root system and dry weight of roots compared with other treatments, though its new leaves and new shoot length had no advantage than other methods. The rooting rate of cleaved incision cutting method was 94.7%, while the rates of other methods were all below 90%. The method of oblique incision had better effects on Index of root system , dry weight of roots and root properties'analysis compared with the methods of flat incision and double-faced incision. Though the method of oblique incision was not good as cleaved incision cutting method on rooting rate and total rooting effect, its could take some advantage in using according to its convenience. 4. The experiment showed that the low levels of ABT could significantly raise the rooting rate of alfalfa, but the high levels could do harm to alfalfa. ABT50 ppm can raise the rooting rate up to 96.8% compared with the rate (80.6%) of CK. The values of new leaves and new shoot length of ABT50 ppm were lower than those of CK. High levels of ABT(100ppm,200ppm,500ppm)all did harm to rooting capacity of alfalfa, these treatments had worse effects on rooting rate, Index of root system and dry weight of roots compared with CK, they also got worse effect on root properties'analysis compared with CK.5. The low level of IBA (long time) and high level of IBA (short time) could lift the rooting rate of alfalfa. IBA50 ppm and IBA500 ppm could both lift the rooting rate of alfalfa. IBA500 ppm could especially get the best effect, its could lift the rooting rate up to 93.0%, which was higher than the rooting rate of CK by 12.4%. High levels of IBA (100ppm,200ppm)both did harm to rooting capacity of alfalfa. IBA200ppm almost kill all the stems of alfalfa, the rooting rate was nearly 0. IBA had inhibited the growth of stems above the ground. Both the values of new leaves and new shoot length of ABT50 ppm were significantly (P<0.01) lower than those of CK.6. Different treatments of water were studied. The result showed that: the highest rooting rate was gotten when the rate (weight of matrix: weight of water) was 1:4. The matrix was perlite. Except this rate, higher or lower rate could reduce the rooting rate. The higher water rate ccould especially reduce the rooting rate. The rooting rate of alfalfa was almost 0 when the water rates were 1:4.5 and 1:5.7. Different treatments of temperature were studied. The result showed that: the highest rooting rate was gotten when the temperature was 21℃, the rooting rate was 35%. Higher or lower rate could do harm to cutting of alfalfa.
