Objective: Comparison of the mechanism of Qiang Li Anti-aging Liquid (QLKLL, a prescription for reinforcing Kidney and Spleen, removing blood stasis) and a Modified Recipe of Qiang Li Anti-aging Liquid (MRQLKLL, a prescription for reinforcing Kidney and Spleen, removing blood stasis and clearing up the bowel viscera to send Turbid downward) in retarding aging. Methods: Using the aging model by hypodermic injection of 1% D-Galactose in mice for six weeks, and meanwhile giving 0.9% NS (aging model group, normal controlled group), QLKLL (QLKLL group) and MRQLKLL (low dose of MRQLKLL group and large dose of MRQLKLL group) separately. Taking samples after six weeks and observing the improved conditions of the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in serum, activity of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) in brain. Results: In comparing to aging model group, it showed thatQLKLL and MRQLKLL could obviously inhibit the increase of level of MDA in serum and the activity of MAO-B in brain (P<0.01-0.001), and enhance the activity of SOD in serum (P<0.05-0.001). Furthermore, it showed that the effects of large dose of MRQLKLL on SOD and MDA is obviously superior to QLKLL. In comparing to normal controlled group, it showed that MRQLKLL could evidently improve the index above mentioned, The effects of MRQLKLL group and normal controlled group were different significantly and had a certain interrelation of dose. Conclusions: QLKLL and MRQLKLL can obviously improve the free radical metabolism of senile body to retard aging. The effect of MRQLKLL is obviously superior to QLKLL. Furthermore, it has a certain relations between dose and effect. It is still short of powerful experimental basis in the activity of MAO-B, and need a further study to verify. These results provide the experimental basis for the mechanism study on retarding aging effect of Tongbu Method of traditional Chinese medicine.
