Objectives:This study established the peak bone density, analyzed the possible lifestyle determinants, and provided useful data for diagnosis and prevention of osteoporosis.MethodsrCalcaneal parameters, including broadband ultrosound attenuation (BUA), sound of speed (SOS), and stiffness (STI),were measured in 300 normal Zhangzhou persons aged 25 to 50 (150 women and 150 men , they were divided into 5 age groups by per 5 years ) by UBIS 3000 QUS (made in France ). The peak value of BUA, SOS and STI and the score of the peak bone density was compared the bone density of men and women with the increasing age, and compared the peak bone density in Zhangzhou with that of in other city. Meanwhile, all persons completed a questionnaire to obtain information on lifestyle including height, bodyweight, nutrition, exercise, smoking and drinking .Results:The peak values of BUA, SOS and STI of the calcaneal were all in 35-40 years for men and women. In men the peak values of BUA was. 78. 87 6.08db/MHz, SOS was 1528. 88 + 35. 60m/s, STI was 98. 51 7. 90%; In women the peak values of BUA was 73. 23 8. 34db/MHz, SOS was 1522.97 34. 91m/s, STI was 93. 37 8. 20%. the BUA, SOS and STI in men and women both changed with the increasing age. BUA, SOS and STI in men werehigher than that of in women in different ages, the BUA, SOS and STI between the 35~40 group and the 45~50 group was different (p <0. 05), meanwhile, the BUA, SOS and STI between the 35~40 group and the 45~ 50 group was significantly different (p <0.01). the peak value in Zhangzhou was lower than that in Beijing and similar to that in Tianjing and Lanzhou . The score of peak bone density in Zhangzhou was higher than that of any other city in China. Height, bodyweight, nutrition, exercise, smoking and drinking were identified as significant predictors of peak bone density. Height, bodyweight, nutrition and exercise could increase the peak bone density, while smoking and drinking could decrease the peak bone density.Conclusion: (1)Ultrasonography was available in detection of people' s density in diagnosis of osteoporosis . It developed a new way to perform bone density study in osteoporosis.(2)The study of peak bone density in Zhangzhou was similar to in other city in China . the higher peak bone density in Zhangzhou was related with terrain, nutrition and labour .(3)Height , bodyweight, nutrition, exercise, smoking and drinking were all of the important determinants on peak bone density .
