AIM:To investigate the correlation and clinical significance between plasma noradrenaline ,adrenaline, serotonin (5-hydroxy-tryptamine) and coronary heart disease (CHD) with type A behavior (TAB) .METHODS:60 patients with type A behavior were dividedinto two groups by the type A behavior pattern questionnaire(TABPQ) .32 exhibited type A behavior and 28 exhibited type Bbehavior. Plasma noradrenaline ,adrenaline, serotonin weremeasured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) .RESULTS:The concentrations of plasma noradrenaline, adrenaline, serotonin with type A behavior were 4.32±1.27 ng/ml, 0.79±0.46 ng/ml, 13.20± 11.18 ng/ml respectively and those with type B behavior were 2.27±0.84 ng/ml,0.34±0.23 ng/ml, 6.16±5.74 ng/ml respectively. There were statistically significant differences between two groups (P<0.001) .The total scores of time hurry and competition hostility (TH±CH) were strongly related to the concentrations of plasma noradrenaline, adrenaline, serotonin respectively (r=0.559,0.506,0.413;p<0.001) ;theysugg-ested that there was a positive correlation between the concentrations of plasma noradrenaline ,adrenaline, serotonin and type A behavior.Ventricular arrhythmias in patients with type A behavior (12 cases,37.5%) were higher than that in patients with type B behavior (3cases,10.6%) , there were statistically significant differences between two groups (P<0.05) .CONCLUSIONS :Type A behavior is considered a independent risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. The patients with TAB tend to be nervous and lead to excitement of sympathetic nerves. With the secretions of norad-renalme,adrenaline, serotonin increasing, the pathologies of coronary arteries are severe and the incidences of malignant arrhythmias; are high. The determinations of plasma noradrena- line, adrenaline, serotonin may provide objectively experimental evidences for diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease with type A behavior.
