Objective To investigate the changes and significance of brain natriuretic peptide and matrix metalloproteinases-2 in patients with atrial fibrillation. Methods 65 patients with persistent atrial fibrillation were included in the atrial fibrillation groups ,whereas 22 patients with sinus rhythm were selected in the control group ,the plasma concentration of BNP and the serum concentration of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The size of left atria diameter were detected by Doppler Ultrasonic cardiogram. Results (1) The levels of plasma BNP in atrial fibrillation group were significantly higher than those in control group (P<0.01), the levels of plasma BNP in the NYHA class IV subgroup were higher than those in the NYHA class III subgroup (P<0.05) , the levels of plasma BNP in the NYHA class III subgroup were higher than those in the NYHA class II subgroup (P<0.05) , the levels of plasma BNP in the NYHA class II subgroup were higher than those in the NYHA class I subgroup (P<0.05). the levels of plasma BNP in the NYHA classIII subgroup in atrial fibrillation group were higher than those in the NYHA class III subgroup in control group (P<0.05),the levels of plasma BNP in the NYHA class II subgroup in atrial fibrillation group were higher than those in the NYHA class II subgroup in control group (P<0.05).The levels of plasma BNP in atrialfibrillation patients with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) subgroup or Coronary heart disease (CHD ) subgroup or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM )subgroup or Hypertension subgroup have no difference(all P>0.05). (2) The levels of serum MMP-2 in atrial fibrillation group were higher than those in control group (P<0.05), the levels of serum MMP-2 in the NYHA class IV subgroup were higher than those in the NYHA class III subgroup (P<0.05) , the levels of serum MMP-2 in the NYHA class III subgroup were higher than those in the NYHA class II subgroup (P<0.05) , the levels of serum MMP-2 in the NYHA class II subgroup were higher than those in the NYHA class I subgroup (P<0.05). the levels of serum MMP-2 in the NYHA classIII subgroup in atrial fibrillation group were higher than those in the NYHA class III subgroup in control group (P<0.05),the levels of serum MMP-2 in the NYHA class II subgroup in atrial fibrillation group were higher than those in the NYHA class II subgroup in control group (P<0.05).The level subgroup serum MMP-2 in atrial fibrillation patients with RHD subgroup or CHD subgroup or DCM subgroup or Hypertension have no difference (all P>0.05).(3) The levels of the serum TIMP-2 showed no differences between the atrial fibrillation group and the control group(P>0.05). (4) The size of left atria diameter in atrial fibrillation group were significant higher than in the control group(P<0.01),there was a positive correlation between left atria diameter and serum MMP-2 levels in the atrial fibrillation group (r=0.308, P<0.05). (5) There was a positive correlation between plasma BNP and serum MMP-2 levels in the atrial fibrillation group(r=0.298, P<0.05).
