Aim: Udo Rhizome and Root (Aralia cordata Thunb.) as the major breed of the traditional Chinese medicine Jiuyanduhuo were recorded into the local Traditional Chinese Medicine Criteria which only ascertained the drug botanical origin and source investigation in some provinces of western China. Through referring to some journals published adroad, especially in Japan, 20 years lately, the author found that the plant had been studied intensively and that its many chemical components had pharmacological activities in various aspects. So the intent of experiment is to set up the groundwork of the evaluative criterion in quality and quantity of the traditional Chinese medicine Jiuyanduohuo. Methods: The roots .of Aralia cordata Thunb. were extracted with boiling 95% ethanol to give a EtOH extract. The EtOH extract was partitioned between water and various organic solvent successively to obtain several fractions. The n-butanol fraction was chromatographed on the Macroporous absorbent resin column (H2O-EtOH) and repeatedly chromatographed on the silica gel (SiO2) column using several kinds of solvent systems and further purified by recrystallization using various organic solvent to get main compounds. The structures of these compounds were identified by means of UV, IR, NMR, MS et al Then the methods to detect and measure the representative compounds vhich were isolated from this crude plant were establish. Results: Five...
