Caragana microphylla Lam. belongs to the leguminosae, family of Caragana Fabr.. It grows in hillside, the pasture of shore side, sand hill and the drying up hillside fields. It distributes extensively in Northeast, Huabei, Mongolia, Sanxi, Shanxi and Gansu area of China, especially in Sanhe, Antu, Helong, Wangqing, Hunchun around Changbaishan mountain area of Jilin province. It tastes bitter, cold in property, and can dispel rheumatism, dredge blood, make patients calm, make heart strong, micturate easily, diminish inflammation and so on. Furthermore, it also was recorded in herbals of China that can reduce fever, diminish inflammation and was marked in treating swelling and sore throat. C. microphylla. is called Gudancao, is a medicinal materials used (prescribed) by doctors of Korean minority in treating, osteomyelitis, rheumatoid at thritid, high blood pressure, fancitis, woman diseaes and etc.C. microphylla. showed antitumor activity to some extent when we were screening nature medicinal resources in Chanbaishan Moutain. The research about chemical constituents and pharmacology of C. microphylla.,was rarely reported. There is no any reports about the antitumor constituents in this plant both from native and abroad. Therefore, in order to develop and make fully use of C. microphylla., and clarify pharmacological activities and relating substances, especially to find out chemical compounds with antitumor activites, we made systemic research with C. microphylla. Material was collected from Helong area.By means of mouse bearing S180 tumor cell in vivo, MCT-7 huaman breast carcinoma and human hela cells in vitro, and separated with silica gel column chromatography, the activity-guided fractionation of petroleum ethel fraction and ethyl acetate fraction of C.microphylla. 13 compounds was obtained from this plant and the chemical structure was ilucidated on the basis of spectroscopic studies including MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, 1H-1H COSY, HSQC, GC-MS.
