The Expression And Significance Of Inflammatory Cytokines IL-4, IL-6 And RANTES In Nasal Polyps

Objective: The inflammatory response is considered to be a important process during the development of nasal polyps'forming.There are many kinds of inflammatory cells in nasal polyps,such as eosinophils,lymphocyte, T cells ,and so on,all of them play a significant part in nasal polyps'forming.But there are controversy about whether neutrophils can play a part in nasal polyps'forming.RANTES has the ability of selective chemotaxis to eosinophils, but has no same effect to neutrophils. IL-6 is produced by neutrophils and can't induced eosinophils expression.IL-4 produced by eosinophils can induced other cytokines'expression, but there were no reports about whether IL-4 can induced IL-6 and RANTES expression.The aim of this article is to investingate the distributing of eosinophils and neutrophils,the expression of IL-4,IL-6 and RANTES in nasal polyps and their roles in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps.Methods: The specimens from 30 nasal polyps (NP) and 20 inferior turbinates ( IT) were studied by hematoxylin and eosin(HE),and by immunohistochemistry for IL-4,IL-6 and RANTES.Tissue sections were observed under optical microscope1. All the data are conducted by spss13.0, chisquare test is used,P<0.05 is refered to statistically significant difference. The relations of IL-4 and RANTES,IL-4 and IL-6 in nasal polyps are conducted by correlateon analysis.Result:â‘ Eosinophils in NP were higher than in IT ( P < 0.05),neutrophils were not higher than in IT ( P > 0.05) ;â‘¡There were significantly large numbers of IL-4+ and RANTES+ cell in nasal polyps compared with healthy control(P< 0.05) ,The numbers of IL-6 +cell in nasal polyps were not larger than that in healthy control ( P>0.05);â‘¢The positive correlation of IL-4 and RANTES was significant ( r = 0.9625,P < 0. 05),there was no correlation with IL-4 and IL-6 ( r = 0.0245, P>0.05).Conclusion: This study indicates that inflammatory cytokines IL-4,RANTES and eosinophils may play an important role in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps. Neutrophils and IL-6 may not play a role in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps.
