Nowadays, distances between different countries are getting shorter and shorter, and various cultures have more and more closer connection with each other. With China's opening to the outside world, the exchange and cooperation between China and foreign countries are increasing day after day. Overseas people are eager to understand China thoroughly, correctly and in detail. At the same time, in order to mingle with the world and establish a good image in the international community to enhance its international status, China needs to introduce itself to the world by every means. News reporting serves as the window to outside world, through which foreign audience can know what is happening to China. Therefore, translation quality directly influences publicity effect and the image of China in the international community.Language is the carrier of culture and reflects the cultural content of human life. One of the major features of news reporting is the frequent use of Chinese culture-loaded terms. These Chinese culture-loaded terms are the direct reflections of the unique features of Chinese culture. However, they are one of the most difficult points and major barriers in the intercultural communication and Chinese-English (C-E) news translation. At present, there have been many studies on E-C news translation while the studies on C-E translation is far from enough, especially the studies on the translation of culture-loaded terms in news. Therefore, in this thesis, the author intends to analyze how to translate the culture-loaded terms in news from the perspective of intercultural communication. This thesis consists of six chapters as follows:Chapter 1 is the introduction of the thesis, which gives a brief description of the study, the development of C-E news translation and the research methodology.Chapter 2 gives a brief survey of news and news translation. The author gives the definitions, language features of news and the role news translation plays on culture and society. The differences between foreign publicity and domestic publicity, which will inevitably influence the choice of translation methods, are discussed as well. Then the subject of culture-loaded terms is examined in Chapter 3. Firstly, the different definitions of culture-loaded terms by different scholars are given, followed by their classification suggested by many scholars. On this basis, the author gives her own understanding of culture-loaded terms and with detailed analysis and abundant examples, the author groups the Chinese culture-loaded terms in this thesis into three groups, namely, politically-loaded terms, economically-loaded terms and other terms.Chapter 4 devotes to the theoretical perspectives. Definitions of culture are first given. As the translation of culture-loaded terms is closely related to language and culture, the author makes detailed explanation on the interrelationship within language, culture and translation, C-E translation and intercultural communication. Since source-language text is the start of translation, so whether the target language text is SL-oriented or TL-oriented is the yardstick of translation. So the author introduces two dialectic culture-related concepts: domestication and foreignization, which construct the theoretical basis of this thesis.Chapter 5 probes into the C-E translation of culture-loaded terms in news. The author holds that three principles, namely, principles of accuracy, clarity and readability should be bore in mind when translating culture-loaded terms in news. Then, methods of translating culture-loaded terms studied by both domestic and foreign scholars are introduced. The author discusses the merits and demerits of every method with abundant examples from perspective of intercultural communication.Chapter 6 is the conclusion of the thesis, including the findings and limitations of the thesis. The author also gives two suggestions for news translators. The author points out foreignization should be the first choice adopted when news translators deals with Chinese culture-loaded terms. And foreignization serves to retain the cultural flavor of the Chinese and help to enhance the influences of Chinese culture in international communication. While domestication also deserves the translators' consideration because it can eliminate cultural conflict and promote understanding with each other in order to realize the intercultural Communication. Finally, the author considers that news translators, as the intercultural communicators, should not only have high bilingual ability and rich intercultural awareness but also social responsibility and social morality.
