Intertextuality is an important theory associated with post-modernism and post-structuralism. Since its debut by Kristeva, a great many scholars and theorists have been engaged in the researched on it from different perspectives. Intertextuality is a way of observing and analyzing texts, which emphasizes on the relationship among texts. Translation is the reproduction on the basis of comprehending the original text. In this way, intertextual relationship not only exists between original texts and the related texts of original texts, but also exists between translated text and the original texts, between translated texts and those related texts of the translated texts. And it is well known that the process of translating study covers the transformation in languages, meaning and texts, so in a broader sense, a great many original texts and the translated texts also compensate and signify each other so that the meaning is enriched. In this way, it is useful to introduce the theory of intertextuality into translation studies.Sanguo Yanyi is not only one of the four classics in China, but also the first long historical classic. It is well known that this classic has a close relationship with some other prior texts such as Military Science of Sun Tzu. Therefore, this novel is full of cultural information. In this thesis, the author will analyze the translation of cultural contents in Three Kingdoms in the light of intertextuality. According to Xing Fuyi'classification, the author of this thesis will disucss the cultural contents from three categories respectively, including material culture, system culture and mentality culture. And several useful stategies that are adopted by Roberts in his translated texts will be picked out. After detailed analysis the readers will have a clear idea about the importance of intertextuality in literary translation. Absolutely, the cultural-charged words or phrases will bring about a lot of complications in the process of translation, but if the translator takes intertextuality into account, he will successfully overcome cultural differences and transform cultural contents effectively.
