The thesis intends to explore subtitle translation in English movies based on Eugene Nida's dynamic equivalence translation theory. Nida is a distinguished American linguist and translation theorist in the contemporary time. He has achieved a great success in the translation field and his achievements in translation have ranked top in modern translation research. Dynamic equivalence that he proposed has exerted a tremendous influence on the translation studies both in China and Western world. Under the guidance of the theory, the author aims to highlight the importance of subtitle translation, to encourage more professionals to engage in this field of research and to promote the development of subtitle translation study. The movie can not only enrich people's lives for recreation and leisure, but also spread different cultures all over the world. Nowadays, more and more foreign movies, most of which come from the United States and Britain, enter into the movie market in China. But because of some language barriers most of audience can not appreciate those movies directly without translation. Translation has a long history and has become a more mature theoretical system, but the history of movie itself is not very long and the movie translation is a relatively new territory. It has unique charms as a media and the influence is extremely far reaching. Dubbing and subtitling for a movie are two main forms. Dubbed movie is also known as the translated movie that is to translate the original movie dialogues or explanations from one language to another one and redub the movie to the audience. Subtitled movie has a written piece of translated dialogue superimposed at the bottom of the frame during a movie. Currently, due to lacking the language coordination and the absence of the charm of the source language culture, its status is gradually being replaced by subtitled movie whose popularity is accumulating in modern world. The Subtitle has its own unique natures of language and culture so the subtitle translation is different from other translations. However, subtitle translation is far from being satisfactory since the study of subtitle translation has not been attached enough importance and it seems that there's no dominant theory in the field at the present time. It's urgent to make the subtitles of English movies into Chinese be translated successfully and make them be more understandable for the Chinese audience to appreciate them. As Nida thought that "A good translation requires the translator to render the meaning of the original in such a dynamic way that the target text wording will trigger the same impact on the target reader as the original wording does upon the original reader."Given the problems of the current subtitle translation, the thesis which mainly disserts the application of dynamic equivalence to subtitle translation in English movies, consists four chapters. In chapter one, it mainly explores the studies and researches on subtitle translation in China and abroad. Chapter two makes some explanations to the definition, nature and constraints of subtitle translation. In the following chapter, the author makes an introduction to Nida's translation theory of dynamic equivalence and its principles and significance. Chapter four mainly elaborates how dynamic equivalence serves as a criterion in the English movie translation taking the most popular movie Kung Fu Panda in 2008 as an example from the aspects of linguistic equivalence, cultural equivalence, aesthetic equivalence and so on.The thesis argues that the successful movie subtitle translation should follow the principle that it can accurately convey the information of the source language to the Chinese audience. It emphasizes that translating movie subtitles should be on the basis of the subtitle translation theory and to promote the development of movie subtitle translation.
