This is a translation report of Chapter Three excerpted from The Cultural Translation of U.S.Television Programs and Movies: Subtitle Groups as Cultural Brokers in China,a dissertation by Doctor Chi-hua Hsiao.Chapter Three records how and why subtitle groups translate U.S.television programs and movies. The translation practice is under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory introduced by American translation theorist Eugene Nida.Functional Equivalence requires that the response of the TL readers should be substantially the same as that of the SL readers. On the basis of functional equivalence, the author intensively analyses the source text from two aspects including lexicon, syntax. To deal with problems, the translator adopts different translation methods during the process of translation: lexical conversion, synthesization, division, voice transformation. The translator strives to let the receptors of the translated text have the similar response with the original receptors. The author of this report has realized the importance of translation theories and the importance of having language skills.I know better that the proper guidance of theory can make a better translation.Besides,in completing this translation practice, the author realized the importance linguistic proficiency of English and Chinese. To strive for a perfect translation,a translator needs perseverant efforts in constant learning and practice.
