Study On Xu Yuanchong's Translation Theory From

The Tang Dynasty witnessed the prime of poetry development in Chinese literary history. The Tang poetry is not only one of our precious cultural heritages, but also a bright pearl in the world treasure house of literature. Being an important medium of the cultural exchange between China and the other countries in the world, the translation of the Tang poetry is significant to the spread of Chinese culture. With strict standard in form, meter, the Tang poetry is typically characterized by brevity, melody, and emotional intensity. The rendition of the Tang poetry requires not only the transference of sound and form, but also the transference of its deep sense hidden between the lines.Xu Yuanchong is a world renowned translator of literature. His theories of"three resemblances","sanmei","sanhua","sanzhi"serve as the valuable guidance in translation. He emphasizes that the most important thing in the translation of the Tang poetry is to reproduce its beauty in sense. Eugene. A Nida, an American translation theorist, proposes theory of functional equivalence, stating that translating consists in"reproducing the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message first in terms of meaning, secondly in terms of style", and he stresses that the relationship between the target language reader and the translated version should be substantially the same as that between the source language reader and the original work. Both Nida and Xu Yuanchong's theories have something in common. Studying the translation of the Tang poetry, we find that Xu Yuanchong's translated work not only reproduces the"sanmei"of the original poem, but also enables the target reader to savor its pleasures in similar profundity. Viewed from a certain angle, we might say that the maximal level of beauty in sense, sound, and from marks a high degree of functional equivalence between the source language and target language texts. My study shows that Nida's functional equivalence theory plays an important role in literary translation. Translation in the East and West can complement each other and will make significant contribution to the promotion of Chinese translation theories and practice.
