In translation, one has to combine creative imagination with loyalty to the original. On the one hand, the original is expected to be reproduced exactly both in form and content; on the other hand, it is an undeniable fact that the translated text inevitably differs from the original. Through the discussion on the functional equivalence and formal modification in view of equivalent translation, together with an analysis of sample sentences in my translation, it is concluded that equivalent translation is by no means rigid or inflexible. A translator has to give full play to his artistic creativity, take every aspect into consideration, thoroughly understand the content of the original as well as its formal features before rendering them into the target language so that the translation is accepted by the readers and achieves the equivalent effect to the largest extent.
