| Redundant negation is one kind of peculiar language phenomenon in the modern Chinese, and it has been widely used in spoken language and written language. The pioneers have paid more attention to research and exploration on the typical constructions of redundant negation phenomenon, but it was hardly discussed at macro perspective as a whole. Therefore, based on the pioneers'study, re-definition and re-classification of redundant negation was done in this study. Furthermore, the distributional characteristics, origin, pragmatic meaning and standardization of the redundant negation were also investigated via linguistic theory including typical example, subjectivity, and grammaticalization. This dissertation is composed of five parts: preface, chapter II, chapter III, chapter IV and conclusion.Chapter I, prefaceFirst, we point out the reason of this study. That is, redundant negation is not non-standard usage which must been corrected, but it is a phenomenon with special function and value. Then, we review the results of pioneers'research. We clarify the mechanism and role of language redundancy according to information theory. And then, we summarize existing research results about redundant negation with four aspects including grammaticalization, cognition, comparison subjective with objective and universality. Finally, we state the ideas and methods of making this description.Chapter II, definition and classification of the redundant negationFirst, redundant negation as a whole language phenomenon in modern Chinese has been re-defined. General features of this phenomenon have been briefly descripted as asymmetry in the distribution, semantic consistency and selectivity of language style. On this basis, redundant negation was been classified as following: According to the different structure, it can be classified into X+(negative words)+VP, (negative words)+X+(VP) ,"X1+(negative words)+X2 (X→X1+X2). According to the different meaning,"X+(negative words)+VP"can be classified into expression meaning of sure, speculation, retrospective, self-control, very, remind, exhort, and not reach of time."(negative words)+X+(VP)"includes coincidence and few."X1+ (negative words)+X2 (X→X1+X2)"redundant negation forms are all for speculate, no longer classified.Chapter III, analysis of redundant negation in three hiberarchyBased on the classification of redundant negation, a typical form in each category was analysised from multi-points of view. Distinctness of the redundant negation, certainly form and coupling phenomena in the syntactic form were explored by surveys, contrast, replacement and other methods. Detailed description on distribution and functions of all kinds of redundant negation was exhibited with subjectivity, cognitive, implication, grammaticalization and other theories. In addition, we make a hypothetical explanation about the condition and mechanism of redundant negation emergence.Chapter IV, function and standardization of the redundant negationIn this chapter, function of the redundant negation phenomenon is firstly summarized in three points: subjective emphasis on cognitive, enhanced expressive force on the expression and highlight of the orderliness in the logic. The typical examples about each function of the redundant negation were analyzed in detail, and the value of the redundant negation was demonstrated in theory. Then, I investigated the issues: whether the redundant negative should be standardization. I clarified two opposing views of the redundant negation form other scholars'attention. According to this study, I consider that we should take more scientific and objective viewpoint on the redundant negation phenomenon and recognize the value of its existence for the use and teaching of modern Chinese.Chapter V, conclusionFirst, we summarize the results and practical significance of this study, indicating that redundant negation phenomena existing in fact present a unique function and significance in language used. It is also reflected our national characteristics of Han at the cognitive. After that, we point out how to combine the study of redundant negation with language teaching in middle schools and modern Chinese teaching. How to utilize the research results into practice, is an issue being worthy of improvements in the future.
