Listening is a language skill that is most frequently used in daily life, and it is also the most important knowledge that people acquire during foreign language learning. For a long time, however, listening has not been given its due attention in listening teaching and studying.Listening, just like reading, was considered as a passive one-way comprehensive ability. In the late 70s, with the deepening of the research, researchers found the schema theory, which regards listening and reading comprehension as a positive mental process. Based on the listeners' existing knowledge, personal experiences and the understanding of the culture about the target language, they can process the input and form the new concept. During this process, the listeners are always in a positive position. The information that they extract from their own memory structure and personal experience far exceeded the input themselves.Focusing on the schema activation, this thesis listed the theoretical basis and the research methods, reviewed how this theory is applied in the second language's listening comprehension both at home and abroad as well. Under the guidance of the schema theory, some corresponding teaching activities and principles were put forward, and a three-month teaching experiment was carried on. The experiment results prove that this schema-oriented teaching methods are applicable and effective to activate students and improve their listening comprehension ability. On the basis of this experiment, this thesis also explores the schema theory's enlightenment to the teaching and the textbooks'compilation on Chinese listening. To sum up, it is an effective method for Chinese teachers to use schema theory in their listening class. Listening teaching activities and the textbooks'compilation should consciously use and refer to this theory, in order to help students improve their listening comprehension level.
