The research of general service words is the core of vocabulary history. In the research of Chinese general service words, the most complicated and also the least researched part in the past, is the changing of members in the same category. This thesis observes the distribution of different words describing human being's falling in pre-Qin times and in medieval times, in order to find the mechanism of these words'evolution.Research shows that the words describing human being's falling from pre-Qin times to medieval times mainly include Dian, Yue, Duo, Yun, Zhui, Xia and Jiang, etc. To ensure the completeness and accuracy of data, this thesis researches 81 ancient books from pre-Qin times to medieval times, including unearthed literature such as carapace-bone-script and inscriptions on bronze; classical native literature such as history, fiction and traditional dictionary; Buddhist Scripture of Chinese translation. All of the above documents cover prose, verse and so on. In terms of the observation of the words, the thesis adopts the method of combining syntax and semanteme. The research of syntax is to observe the pairing up of words, while the research of semanteme type is to observe the natural classification.The thesis consists of introduction, body and conclusion, including 5 chapters. Chapter One, also the introduction, introduces the reason, aim and meaningfulness of the topic; reviews the general situation of Chinese general service words; explains the research method, research materials and outline; point out the core of this research is to describe the distribution of members of"Falling"vocabulary system from pre-Qin times to medieval times; and research the evolution situation of"Falling"vocabulary system from pre-Qin times to medieval times. Chapter Two and Chapter Three take Warring States period as a watershed to divide pre-Qin Chinese language into pre-Qin I and pre-Qin II, respectively describing distribution"Falling"verbs of pre-Qin I and pre-Qin II, summing up their system, and making analysis and comparison between the members and system of"Falling"conceptual field of these two periods. Chapter Four, based on detailed description of"Falling"verbs in medieval times (from Eastern Han to Sui Dynasty), compares the"Falling"conceptual field of pre-Qin times and medieval times. Chapter Five, the conclusion, is the difficult point of this thesis. Chapter Five, based on the detailed analysis of Chinese"Falling"verbs and vocabulary system from pre-Qin to medieval times, concludes an evolution situation and mechanism of Chinese"Falling"vocabulary system and then reflects on the problems in this thesis.
