Grammar teaching has always been a hot issue in foreign language teaching and research. Lots of teachers and researchers spent long time in studying how to improve the learning interest of students and finally realize the proper application of grammar in communication.The paper tries to summarize the existing grammar teaching theories and methods, and form the"three-level"model of"understanding, solidifying, communicating". The subjects of the project are the two classes of students from Jiangqiao Junior High School in Shanghai City. The study uses this three-level model in a teaching example and evaluates its performance. The aim is to solve three questions as follows and finally get to a conclusion and provide suggestions.The research is intended to find out,1. How to lead students to concentrate on the language learning through understanding the meaning of language, grasping the grammar structure and finally forming the foundation of language ability instead of just targeting at the grammar learning.2. How to lead the students to develop the self-learning ability after class based on the language points grasped in class. With this ability, students can solidify the understanding on grammar and language points which will set up the base for using the language in the next stage.3. How to motivate the students'proactive participation in the language learning, improve their interests, recognize their individual mental and physical characteristics. With all these steps in place, we make sure that the students can properly use the language in certain scenario and finally form the communication competence. The paper is made up of five parts,Partâ… puts forward the aim and significance of the research. It analyzes the background of the research and points out the necessity and importance of the research. It also introduces the structure of the paper.Partâ…¡is Literature Review. The paper reviews the development of the theories of foreign language teaching, summarizes the existing grammar teaching methods and defines the principles of grammar teaching design. Based on the combination of grammar teaching methods and design, it raises the three level design model of"understanding, solidifying and communicating".Partâ…¢introduces the design of the research. Firstly it raises the problems to be studied in the research. Secondly, it introduces the design on teaching example. And finally it analyzes the involved research method, tools and the detailed procedure of the research.Partâ…£gives a teaching example. The paper analyzes the example on how to realize the three-level model. Then it evaluates the performance of the teaching and learning process.Partâ…¤draws conclusions, and account for the insufficiencies in this paper and the further research which should be conducted in the future.
