The Study Of Subjectivity In Zhang Baihua's Literary Translation

Traditionally, translation study, which was mainly source text oriented, focused on the analysis of linguistic transformation, put the principle "faithfulness and equivalence to the original" at the first place, namely, how to make a good translation possible. Yet the translator's subjectivity has long been neglected in the translation field, although he/she always plays an important role in the process of translating. It is the "culture turn" since the 1980s in translation studies that made the subjectivity of the translator conspicuous. With the culture turn, translation studies break through the constraints of traditional literary and lingustic models. After the culture turn, many researchers'attention shifted from the source texts to the translated texts and to the translators, some researches generally changed from prescription to description. The scope of translation studies has expanded to such subjects as to the selection of the original text before translating, the influence of translators" ideology, the influence of target culture on translation strategies, and even the effects of translated text on the target culture. However, the studies at present have laid stress on the macro theoretical analysis and position of translators, therefore, it is comparatively weak in the micro study and exploration on a specific translator. In order to probe into the study on translator's subjectivity, it is quite necessary to study from a specific case, from individual to general, and combine case study with systematic research.This thesis intends to make a study of Zhang Baihua's literary translation theory and practice from the perspective of the translator's subjectivity. Since women translators are seldom analyzed, and mini-fiction translators are seldom analyzed either. Zhang Baihua. as a woman translator and as one of the first generation of mini-fiction writers and one of the prominent figures of mini-fiction translators, whose translating career developed at the same time with mini-fiction writings, worthe doing a research. The author tries to analyse her translation purpose and practice from the perspective of translator's subejectivity and approach the translators subjectivity from contemporary translation theories:Hermeneutical theory, Skopos theory, Poly-system theory and Deconstruction theory in order to illustrate that translator's subjectivity plays an initiative role in the process of producing a translated work.Zhang Baihua advocates that the purpose of translation is to enrich the literature of the motherland, and translated literature is part of national literature. This is in line with the culture-based translation studies. Thereorc, this thesis is to focus on one of the most prominent figures in mini-fiction translation-----Zhang Baihua, analysing translation ideology and translation capability in the hope that it will contribute to the study of translation subjectivity, shed light on the study of women translators and fill the vacancy of study of mini-fiction translators. This is also the innovation of this paper and significance of the research. Moreover, women transltors and the mini-fiction translators deserve the attention of other scholars to do further research.
