On The Translation Of Subtitle From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

With the rapid development of science and technology as well as the diversification of the media, especially with the popularity of Internet, VCD and DVD, more and more foreign audiovisual products become available for Chinese audiences. Watching foreign audiovisual works in our spare time is not only an indispensable way of entertainment, but also an important means of cross-cultural communication. However, it is impossible for China's studios to dub and captain all the foreign audiovisual works. Therefore, in order to meet the audience's requirement for such products, people choose to show foreign audiovisual works by adding Chinese subtitles at the bottom of the screen, with the original sound retained. Gradually, this kind of translating foreign audiovisual works has become more and more popular.In recent years, researches on subtitle translation have made certain achievements, but theories concerning such translation practice are far from being satisfactory. This thesis analyzes the E-C translation of subtitles in Growing Pains (1st Season) from the perspective of Skopostheorie. According to Skopostheorie, in translation, the end justifies the means. The purpose of subtitle translation is to provide, within the constraints of time and space, well-translated subtitles that may contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen. To achieve this purpose, subtitlers should follow certain principles and strategies in their translation practice, which are the main focuses of this thesis. It is expected that the author can make meager contribution to further improvement of subtitle translation, and that more scholars will devote their efforts to this research area for deeper insights.
