The Research On The Function Of Adjectives Used As Adverbs

The research on the function of adjectives used as adverbs always attracts linguists'attention. Previous studies have studied scattered aspects of this problem. This paper focuses on the overall research of adjectives used as adverbs. Respectively, this paper explores the problem from the following aspects:ability of the adjectives used as adverbs, the change of position and so on.The paper includes six chapters.Chapter one is the introduction of the paper. It introduces the purpose and significance of the paper, and also gives a comprehensive analysis of the previous studies which is related to this thesis.Chapter two analyzes the ability of the adjectives to act as adverbs.Firstly, it confirms the function of adjectives used as adverbs. Then, it researches the ability of the adjectives to act as adverbs and describe it with an inequality.Chapter three is an important part of the thesis. We study on semantic orientations of the adjectives. According to the different orientations, We divide double-orientation adjectives into three types:verb-subject, verb-object and subject-object.Chapter four makes a comparison between the adjectives used as adverbs and used as attributives. We compare it separately from aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. And it also points out four states of adjectives:original state, temporary state of companion, after-emerging state and possible state.When adjectives belong to original state and state with nature, transposition will not lead to the change of meanings.Chapter five investigates the order of the multiple adverbials.It compares the order of other modes of adverbials with the adjectives used as adverbs.Chapter six is the conclusion. We summarize our viewpoints and explain the value and the innovation of this thesis. We also points out some problems unsolved which we can furtherly explore later.
