Poly-dimensional Translation Of The Nuclear Culture-loaded Words In Lun Yu

Lun Yu, as a great classic embodying insightful instruction of Confucius and his disciples and the most influential symbol of Chinese culture, has played a significant part in human progresses as well as in the cultural exchange in the world. With the development of cultural exchange amongst countries and the increasing influence of Chinese culture on the world, the relevant studies on Lun Yu have been paid more and more attention to, therefore have been further pushed forward. Recent years have witnessed the in-depth research about this classic from various perspectives and the pop-up of different interpretations in particular. Scholars in translation fields have also engaged in this wave and succeeded in bringing about fruitful achievements.This thesis aims to include the dominant factors which influence the translators'choices of linguistic expressions and translation techniques for culture-loaded words by way of a comparison and contrast between two rather influential English versions of Lun Yu respectively translated by the famous Scottish sinologist James Legge and the noted Chinese eccentric literati Gu Hung-ming, both of whom lived in largely the same period but of sharply different cultural backgrounds.Theoretic support comes from principles for cultural translations. The paper adopts German Skopos theory as theoretical framework, chooses the four culture-loaded words, namely"Ren","Junzi","Li"and"Dao"as research subjects, collects all the expressions of the four culture-loaded words in the two versions and analyzes the similarities and distinctions of their translations from the angle of Venuti's Domestication and Foreignization by adopting Peter Newmark's Semantic translation and Communicative translation strategy. The author compares all the English equivalents of them from the perspectives of translation purpose, culture, translation techniques in order to include the dominant factors which influence the choice of linguistic expressions and translation techniques.The results of the thesis shows that the dominant factors which influence the translator's choice of linguistic expressions and translation techniques consists of the following three aspects: 1) translation purpose; 2) the cultural background of the translators; 3) linguistic features of the original text. Based on the research, the author put forward the principles and techniques which should be obeyed in the process of the culture-loaded words translation. It is hoped that this research will make, to some extent, contribution to the translation of culture-loaded words in classical works.
